Cedar Park Timberwolves fall to Southlake Carroll in a squeaker

SOUTHLAKE, TX, March 27, 2009 - Maybe it was the unexpected cold weather, but the Cedar Park Timberwolves started out slow Friday night at Southlake Carroll.  The score was 4-1 after the first quarter and the T-wolves trailed 6-2 at halftime.  CP fell as far behind as 10-5 and the score was 10-6 with five minutes remaining in the game when the T-wolves called a timeout.  I don’t know what the coach said during that time out, but the Timberwolves, needing a goal a minute to win the game, came out on fire.  Within three minutes they had scored three goals and narrowed the score to 10-9.  With a minute left, CP had a man-advantage thanks to a Dragon slashing penalty.  They ran a play with 18 seconds left in the game to attempt a tie, and Stephen Smith rang a shot off the crossbar with 5 seconds remaining.  But for a few more minutes or a little more gravity, the T-wolves might have pulled this one out, but time ran out with the tying goal yet to materialize.

”I thought if we had played the whole game the way we played the fourth quarter we would have won,” said Cedar Park coach Chris Knight.    “I was proud of the way the team came back and refused to quit when down.  It was too bad we didn’t get one or two more, but Southlake played a good game and deserved the win.”  Ryan Fairclough led the T-wolves with four goals, followed by Stephen Smith with three. Gerad Stratton and Holden Ilseng had a goal apiece to close out the scoring.  Defensively, Rylan Gilley had four ground balls and Holden Ilseng had two; Joel Millikan, Michael Yope and Austin Mueller each had one.  Middies Ryan Fairclough and Gerad Stratton had three Gb’s apiece, Zach Duncan, Tanner Brown & Nick Spier had two.  Colton Yarborough had six saves and Joey Sundgren had three.

Cedar Park continues their Dallas trip tomorrow with a 2:00PM faceoff against last year’s DII semifinalist, Coppell.
